it is prime time for one of my favorite veggies, beets. this fine root vegetable is available year round but is best from june till october, so grab some at the market. beets are good and good for you. filled with vitamins and antioxidants, beets have been proven to help protect against heart disease, birth defects and certain types of cancer, so eat up.

it is the perfect time for tomatoes so run out and get some of these late summer treats while the season is at its peak. of course you can hit your neighborhood grocer any time of the year and find romas and beefsteaks that are grown in a greenhouse throughout the year to keep up with the wide use of the fruit, but they are just not the same. if you head to the farmer's market in august and september you can find all sorts of tomato gems. little sungolds that taste like candy. beautiful green zebra tomatoes with just the right tartness. maybe even some fuzzy peach tomatoes with their unique soft skin.

i of course, as most chefs these days did, grew up with yan can cook, the frugal gourmet and julia child in my living room all the time. they loved food as much as i did which made me feel a connection to them, though i only knew them through the television. watching the new movie, julie and julia, brought me even closer to julia and also introduced me to a fellow, slightly crazed yet food loving julie.

the first wandering goat dinner has come and gone...and it was a blast! i was very happy with the way things turned out, especially after some of the curve balls that were thrown during the days leading up to it. almost like being on a television show where the producers try their very best to f@#k with the chefs over and over again to see if they can hang. interesting...
